[21:35] <Aldante_Fax> You approach what used to be town square. Blasted flat are bleached white cobblestones, fragments of bone fused with superheated skin. Ahead of you, you see the destroyed orphanage, standing as a silent monolith attesting to what happened three night's past.
[21:35] * Koreyan drags his bubbly colleague outside, lighting a cigarello for himself, and another for Janna
[21:35] * Carson heads to where the briefing's gonna be, all shopping and sidequesting done.
[21:36] <Yvalphone> "Oh my..." the Mithra says as she sees the devistation.
[21:36] * Mayard heads straight back to the meeting location, his business done.
[21:36] * Tetra stays silent for a while as he justs stares at what was once a bustling orphanage.
[21:37] <Aldante_Fax> The ground has scores from where the initial impact of the explosion took place - there are some soldiers milling about, surveying the damage while on patrol. Sitting near the Home are a few small children - part of the group that was with that matron who died - staring hollowly ahead.
[21:38] <Tetra> "... how many died here today...?"
[21:38] <Yvalphone> "Too many..."
[21:39] <Aldante_Fax> "None today, as of yet," says a short barrel-chested man with a heavy battleaxe strapped to his back and a mace at his side. "It'll get worse. Another raid like that and we won't have a town left to defend. The death toll stopped at around four hundred from the last raid."
[21:40] <Yvalphone> Approaching one of the soldiers, Yval gestures slightly to the children. "What's going to happen to them?"
[21:40] <Tetra> "... so this could be it."
[21:40] <Tetra> "We're heading off to save a place that might be gone when we come back..."
[21:41] <Yvalphone> "You can't think like that."
[21:41] <Aldante_Fax> He brushes back his red hair and folds a pair of large forearms over his chest, watching the children. Some of them are trying to cheer up the other ones. "They're on their own. We've given them places to stay but they refused it. Said they wanted to go back to the orphanage. Everybody has their place, I suppose."
[21:41] * Yvalphone sighs. "I wish we could help them."
[21:42] <Aldante_Fax> "I heard the rumors. You guys are going to Quartz, aren't you? To put an end to this Hell."
[21:42] <Carson> (brb)
[21:42] * Tetra nods.
[21:42] <Tetra> "Yeah... we are."
[21:42] <Tetra> "... speaking of which."
[21:43] * Tetra looks at Yvalphone.
[21:43] <Tetra> "We should get going. The others are probably waiting for us."
[21:43] <Aldante_Fax> The guard's gaze lingers on you two for a moment longer, then he begins to move off. "Good luck," he offers.
[21:44] <Yvalphone> "Thanks...and could you guys try to talk to the kids again?"
[21:45] * Yvalphone then turns and begins heading to their meeting site.
[21:46] <Aldante_Fax> "They know what to do when it starts raining bodies. Eventually they'll figure out what they're going to do, or die trying. They know the concept of death better than most," he says, turning his back to Yvalphone. "Those orphans...Their parents were killed in the earlier raids." He heads to the far side of the square, opposite from you guys.
[21:46] * Tetra keeps heading off, swinging by a shop to pick up some supplies before returning to the meeting site.
[21:48] <Aldante_Fax> The sun reaches it's high point and you all meet back up in front of the Town Hall after completing your chores. A young herald of about 13 or 14 years of age, fresh-faced and well-rested, walks out from the inn, laughing as he did at something. Rather short, he ends up looking up at the majority of the party.
[21:48] * Mayard looks the herald right in the eyes.
[21:49] <Carson> (back)
[21:49] <Aldante_Fax> "Some big people..." He says, then his mouth breaks into a grin. "You guys are it, huh? Come with me, I'll take you to where you need to go." He looks at Mayard and winks, before moving towards the Island Wall, with a little bit of spring in his step.
[21:50] * Koreyan blows a final smoke ring and stops out the remaining ash, then follows the short herald.
[21:50] * Carson blinks at the man's upbeatness, but follows anyway.
[21:50] * Tetra just follows the herald.
[21:50] * Mayard also follows.
[21:51] * Yvalphone follows as well.
[21:51] <Aldante_Fax> You arrive at the Island Wall a few minutes later, accompanied by some of the chatter of the youth. He seems rather excited - he was just drafted in yesterday, when he turned fifteen, and with all the talk buzzing around the barracks, he can't help but look forward to the coming days.

At the third terrace, the kid, who identifies himself as Yarek, bounces lightly on his heels as he waits for the crowd to catch up.

[21:56] <Koreyan> "A giant clock? What do you mean?"
[21:56] * Yvalphone pats Mayard on the head as she walks by.
[21:56] <Mayard> "Yeah, I heard that."

[21:56] <Mayard> "It is pretty cool."
[21:56] <Yvalphone> "Sounds interesting."
[21:57] <Aldante_Fax> "The whole city is a massive clock. Even parts of the walls move. Huge gears and that sort of stuff. I don't know. One day I want to head to Sanctuary to study and be an Engineer, so I can make stuff like that."
[21:58] * Koreyan thinks for a moment. "Sounds like quite a sight. I hope it's still in good shape when we get there..."
[21:58] <Aldante_Fax> "I have some more duties to attend to, but inside here is the room where I was instructed to lead you to. I hope it's not too cramped for all of you, but the garrison captain should be along shortly to discuss what needs to be done."
[21:58] * Mayard nods.
[21:58] * Carson nods and heads in.
[21:58] * Koreyan steps in as well.
[21:59] * Yvalphone winks at Yarek. "Thanks, and keep striving for your dreams."
[21:59] * Mayard remembers that he needs to be inside the room, and follows the others.
[21:59] * Tetra heads into the room and waits, holding his left arm at the elbow.
[21:59] <Aldante_Fax> Yarek moves up the flight of stairs and waves as you file into the room, before departing to perform other duties. "Good luck, you guys!"

[21:59] * Yvalphone waves goodbye then enters.

[22:01] <Aldante_Fax> The room is actually rather large. Built directly into the wall itself, it is basically a large meeting hall, with maps strewn all about displaying red and blue marks, Xs and Os, probable enemy attacks, identifications of vulnerable sections of the wall. The War Room, effectively. There are plenty of chairs to sit on.
[22:01] * Mayard curiously looks over the maps.
[22:01] * Tetra stands, irregardless.
[22:02] * Nachttier idly examines one of the maps. Looming behind Mayard.
[22:02] * Carson takes his favorite spot - a wall to lean on - and shifts his eyes from map to map.

[22:02] <Aldante_Fax> The situation looks grim, from what the maps depict. The town is divided into several sections, and many of them have been crossed out with angry red Xs.

[22:03] * Koreyan looks at some of the larger maps of the area, trying to keep some of the information in his mind.

[22:04] <Mayard> "I don't like all the bad spots in the walls."
[22:04] * Yvalphone grins. "This place has definately seen better days."

[22:04] <Nachttier> "I think we'll be safer outside of the city walls in them, if these maps are any indication."

Sorry to keep you waiting. Let's skip all the pleasantries and get right down to business. Everyone take a seat, please."

[22:18] * Carson thinks for a minute, and sits down.

"The paladins that were responsible for that explosion you experienced several days ago are praying to their god to grant them guidance. As of right now they are still in a critical condition - as you might know, their combined efforts only wiped clean the town square, and not the whole town free of undead."

[22:23] <Aldante_Fax> "The town is free of undead, for now, but the sheer amount of undead that attack us on their raids give them 'safe zones' to launch their corpses, while we retreat and consolidate our defenses. Most of the town is deserted, and the bulk of the people are either manning the walls or are located close to one."
[22:23] <Aldante_Fax> "The Paladins plan to head straight to Quartz without any rest and perform their last service as soldiers of the realm to destroy the command center of the undead, and whoever is controlling them. It is very likely that they will not come back from this mission, judging by what happened from the first incident they triggered."

[22:24] <Mayard> "...and what'll happen to us?"
[22:24] * Yvalphone nods. "So they're willing to sacrifice their lives for the remaining residence of Cocoon."
[22:24] * Carson shakes his head. "Poor bastards."
[22:25] <Aldante_Fax> "Don't think of it like that. Cocoon is the last bastion on this island that is an organized community, and it has the responsibility of defending a Land Bridge. If the undead overrun Cocoon, they will prepare to make an attack on Sanctuary, and begin spreading very quickly.
[22:25] <Koreyan> "... Is there anything we can do to help give you all a fighting chance while we're gone?"
[22:26] <Aldante_Fax> "Not a thing. You have to worry about keeping the Paladins alive long enough for them to finish their mission."
[22:26] <Koreyan> "I mean... looking around, it looks like this place is almost gone as it is. What happens if they launch another major attack while we're headed to Quartz? There wouldn't be any Paladins to help then..."

At the front, the Paladins are kneeling before a large marble statue of a robed and shrouded woman.

[00:13] <Aldante_Fax> One of the Paladins, a man with cropped raven black hair and a short ponytail turns. Half of his face is bandaged and the other half seems heavily bruised. "You are the escorts," he states at Koreyan as he approaches, nodding as if he knew it all along. Which, he probably did. The other paladins are spraed out in two semicircles around the statue, murmuring and clutching religious items.

[00:15] <Aldante_Fax> He looks at Koreyan through a swollen eye, a brilliant sapphire blue shimmering behind those lids. "We're almost done. Give us another hour."
[00:15] <Aldante_Fax> "I hope we will not be a serious weight on your shoulders. Many of us are wounded, but we look after our own, so I don't think we'll have much trouble until we get to Quartz."

[00:17] <Koreyan> "Another hour... that shouldn't be a problem at all. Is there anything we can do to help you?"
[00:17] <Aldante_Fax> He turns to one side, looking over half of the Paladins. Many of them are as injured if not more seriously injured than he - one is visibly trembling, but as she murmurs words to her goddess, the trembling slows and eventually fades. "Her muscles are severly taxed, so she prays to relieve herself of the pain," the man explains.

[00:18] * Carson loooks at the floor intently. Poor bastards.

[00:21] <Aldante_Fax> The woman seems to not notice, her eyes shut as she moves the rosary through her fingers bead by bead as she recites her verses quietly to herself. She, like the rest of the paladins, are reciting holy writ in unison - together the murmur can be clearly heard: "For we walk into the light with open arms in the face of all odds, overcoming adversity and hardships in the pursuit of happiness and tranquility..."
